SKRATCHPAD SF is happening this Wednesday, February 1st. We’re pretty excited to have two DOPE acts:
Rocky Rivera with her team, DJ Roza and Irie Eyez.
and
Renegade Rockers, an SF original breaking crew, founded in 1983.
DJs bring your needles, headphones, and records for the Q & A session!
No cover, just culture.
Rocky Rivera is a Hip-Hop journalist by day, MC by night, who found international acclaim by winning a Contributing Editor position on MTV’s docu-series “I’m From Rolling Stone” in 2007. After lacking inspiration in the literary world, she decided to finally pursue Hip-Hop as a participant, not only as an observer, and began to fill the void with thought-provoking music that you can dance to. (Think Lauryn Hill meets Public Enemy with West Coast beats) Her moniker and album theme is derived from a book entitled “The Gangster of Love” by Jessica Hagedorn, as Rocky examines love, war, and a young woman’s journey along the way.

The Renegade Rockers are a professional breakdancing group based in the city of San Francisco,California. The group was founded at City College of San Francisco in 1983, when members of the Stunt City Rockers and Eternal Breaking Crew decided to unite and join forces to create the Renegade Rockers.
Throughout the decade of the 1980’s, the Renegade Rockers earned their respect from battling and competing against the best breakdancing groups in and around the Bay Area. Whether it was by entering contests or (literally) running into rival crews on the streets, the Renegade Rockers were always ready to “show and prove” no matter what. Members of the Stunt City Rockers included: Oc Silva (co-founder Renegade Rockers), Romeo Soler, Mike Palada, Donnie Diego, Greg Dionicio, Brian, Don & Eric Datanagan, Chuck Mabanag, Ray Castillo, Fel Cruz, Cesar Agustin, and Sean Jantoc. The Stunt City Rockers lived up to their name by the use of acrobatic moves which would later help them create “circus” styled routines that distinguished them from others. The Eternal Breaking Crew were a young energetic start-up squad which included: Alfred “Gizmo” David (co-founder Renegade Rockers and Knuckle Neck Tribe (KNT), Kevin “Shleprock” San Felipe, Victor “Styles” Rosales, Leo Mahiney, James Manzano, Noel Limos, Rory Sarmiento, Jerry Aragon, Darren, Ronnie Yemat, Pere Perez, Rofer Rogelio, and Joel Argonza. Once organized, the Renegade Rockers made an immediate impact on the local breakdancing scene by finishing in 1st place in their first b-boy championship they entered (which took place in Newark,Califaornia). Throughout the remainder of the decade, the Renegade Rockers went on to win several more championships all over the state of California with additional members Henry Maltez, Danny ‘SpinBad’ Alvarez, Ace, Trina and Tricia Mounce, Joel Mounce, a young Jazzy Jim, and others. As a result of their success, the Renegade Rockers had built a breakdancing dynasty by the bay.

BEATROCK MUSIC COLLABORATES WITH BAY AREA ARTIST LEO DOCUYANAN TO CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY OF INDIE HIP HOP LABEL.
For the 2 year celebration, the love for art & will extend to the visual realm; as the event will premiere a special Beatrock Music art exhibit courtesy of photographer Leo Docuyanan. Docuyanan’s name is already on the radar of many; especially known for his portraits of Bay Area Hip Hop icons. “I was already familiar with his portraits” says Strand, “When Leo first brought up the idea of the collaboration, I was honored that he saw a natural connection between his work and our artists. We are very excited to team up with him.”
Each Beatrock Music artist sat with Docuyanan to shoot their portrait for the exhibit. “Everyone in the Beatrock family has their own individual identity and musical aesthetic” says Docuyanan. Guests will be able to see the visual personalities of each artist, and also see what connects them as musical collective. Docuyanan notes “The sound of the label aims celebrate that golden era of Hip Hop, combined with each artist’s independent and quality driven styles. The music is organic and free-flowing. I’m glad it has been embraced by all walks of life.”
Music fans will be treated to performances from label artists, including: Rocky Rivera, Power Struggle, Otayo Dubb, Bwan, and Kiwi. The excitement is also building around a special performance from Bambu with Seattle based artist, Prometheus Brown (of Blue Scholars). The two just completed a national tour, and have previously collaborated on WALK INTO A BAR, released earlier this year on Beatrock Music. Bambu hopes this will be a night that fans will not soon forget. “They can expect Pro Brown and I to wild-the-F-out! Ha!”
